**Mathematics is Important for the Hebrew Israelite**

Math is important to master, as it is the foundation of all scientific knowledge and exploration. Learning real science begins with knowing math. However, the average Black American child who is public schooled is not expected, or even encouraged to learn math and do well with the subject. Our children are barely getting by and then are expected to be ready for college and their careers. We know as a people, our numbers are lacking in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. This should not be the case. It has been proven that when Black American children are homeschooled, they develop a keen interest, and even excel in this area.

**What follows are 2 high-quality math programs to use for your homeschool.**You can choose the first one and then supplement study with the other, or just use one of them. It's up to you. It is important to keep in mind that the first one is primarily textbook-based, and the second one (Khan Academy) although extremely useful, is totally online and strictly procedurally focused. The first one is low-cost, but number 2 is completely free. Of the two programs, the first one recommended by Dr. Robinson - Saxon is the better choice.

**1. Dr. Art Robinson, President and Senior Researcher of The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine**

Dr. Art Robinson is a biochemist who created a stellar homeschool curriculum when his wife died many years ago leaving him to care for 6 children by himself. He was accepted to CalTech, MIT, Harvard, and Rice University, and then became a professor of chemistry at University of California at San Diego. Dr. Robinson knows mathematics and science exceptionally well. This makes him worth listening to and learning from regarding the teaching of mathematics and the physical sciences.

Robinson wanted to keep teaching his children after his wife died, so he developed a self-teaching curriculum that required the children to work independently. Several of his children went on to become scientists and professors, some skipping the first 2 years of college. Dr. Robinson’s curriculum has mathematics at the core alongside writing and lots of reading.

**This is what Dr. Robinson recommends for teaching mathematics:**

1. The young child learns all the basic math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This can be done with flash cards and math practice worksheets. No book is necessary at this level.

2. Once the young child masters the basic facts, start them on Saxon Math 54, a 4th grade level text. You can also choose to use a different math text or curriculum, if you want to use something else. But Saxon Math is used by many homeschoolers and is considered to be top-quality. It uses an "incremental approach."

3. The child does math first thing each day, completing one lesson out of the book daily is the goal.

4. The child works through each book through Advanced Math and Calculus.

5. If your child is older and you don't know which level to start them with, give them a
